There is nothing funny about this picture.
Mourning for George Floyd and all the other
African-Americans who were killed while in police custody isn’t what any person
would call fun. And of course, the fact that it is happening at all is a
further sign of the unworthiness and failure of so many of us. Failure on so many levels. Failure that must come with a terrible reckoning.
Some might call the bringing of a kaiju to a place of public grief inappropriate. We reply that it is
far less inappropriate than black men and women being choked to death, or shot
in the back, or dying young because they lived next to a refinery or highway
overpass. They might say that it’s not right to bring this subject into a forum
of humorous escape. We reply that there
is no escape, for any of us. It is not only right to bring up this subject
here, but necessary. And bring it up
again, and again, in many more such “unsuitable” places.
And if you'll notice, the focus is not on MechaGodzilla. He is not there to distract, but rather to demonstrate that no universe, fictional or real, is exempt from our frequently pathetic reality. Calisatsu included.
We did not consider the posting of this picture lightly. In
the end, it was ultimately an easy choice, because truthfully we had no choice, if we were
to respect ourselves—or anybody else—as human beings.
